Notes for John Luter:

John is recognized as being one of the four brothers that are considered to be the progenitors of the Luter/Lewter families in America.

1. Bought land in Southampton Co., Va. 1763.

2. Appointed Administrator of Thomas Luter's Estate (Court minutes 1778 - 1789). which could indicate that John was probably a son of Thomas.

3. The list of children is taken from the records of the Black Creek Baptist Church, Southampton County, Va.

Not sure if this is the John Luter that we are looking for, however, since the S and the L of early script is so similar, I felt that I should retain this record for possible future re-thinking.

My initial research on this family started with the book: "Luter-Lewter Family of England, Virginia,

North Carolina and States South and West" by Mrs. Belle Lewter West. 1974

In 1763, John bought 30 acres of land from John and Mary Lloyd, next to No Head Swamp,

Southampton County, Va. (DB 3/219). In 1770, he bought land between Blackwater and No Head

Swamp, adjoining land already owned.

John was granted Certificate of Administration on the estate of his supposed father, Thomas, with John and Giles Johnson granting $500 security for him. It is believed he inherited land from his father. No will has been found; however, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of John Luter. Sr. is recorded in WB 5/483, Southampton County, Va. dated 29 jan. 1803; signed by Willie Griffin, Sam

Corbett and Petway Johnson (WB 5/520).

Land Tax Records of 1803, show John with 197 acres. DB 14/102, dated 14 May 1803, records Commissioners sale to Jonathan Luter (4th son of John and Elizabeth Luter) 197 acre tract of land belonging to John Luter, deceased, by No Head Swamp. The names and birth dates of their twelve children are recorded in the Register of Blackwater Baptist Church in Southampton County, Va
