Mr. C.M. Lewter of Durham

Durham, May 12 - Mr. Charles Madison Lewter died this morning at 1:30

at his home on West Chapel Hill Street after an illness of ten months.

Mr. Lewter, however, had not been badly off all of that time. Untill last

summer he had been mechanical engineer for the American Tobacco

Company, working at Winston ten or more years. He was a Chapel Hill

man and untill Orange County was cut off from Durham, he lived in the

mother county. He was one of the oldest residents of the city in point

of actual living here.

He served through the Civil War and would have been 69 years of age

the 16th of June. He married Miss Tula Check of Chapel Hill and from

that union are four children: Mrs. C.E. King, Mrs. Emma Farrell, Messrs

A.A. and J.R. Lewter all of this city. A sister, Mrs. W,N, Pritchard of

Chapel Hill, and a brother, Mr. A.S. Lewter of Aberdeen, also survive.
