Notes for Johnson Olive Lewter:

Johnson O and 'Ronie' Lewter's house still stands..on Lewter Shop Road in Chatham Co NC and is owned by Ferrell Descendents.

J O's death per NC Death collection Index and tombstone inscription.

Listed in the 1860 Chatham Co NC census page 25b

Up-date Oct. 11, 2010: The property has been sold and this old house torn down.

Johnson had been working in the shop across the road from the house when Ronie had called him to come for lunch. On the way to the house, Johnson had stopped to move a calf that had been tethered on a rope and let graze in the front yard. While driving in the stake to attach the rope to at the new location, Johnson fell over dead.

This is a great picture, Susan! All of mine are taken from the road. Nollie Ferrell's house was known locally as the Johnson Olive Lewter home place. It's really a shame it was lost. It was the first thing you saw when you crossed the Chatham Co NC line. It's really a lovely piece of property with such an interesting history, what with Johnson's brothers and father going off to fight in the Civil War and him

staying home to take care of his mom (he was only 13). Only his brother, Henderson Lewter (Belle Lewter West's grandfather) survived the war and made it home.
