Notes for Caroline Josephine Lewter:

Proven child of Barbee Lewter and Gillaney 'Gilly' Byrd Lewter per their wake county NC wills and estate records. Per Wake Co NC marriage bond with Caroline Lewter, Madison's initials were J R M Yates. This fits/confirms family lore that Madison's full name was James Madison Yates. Per NC Marriage Register: Yates, J R Madison Lewter, Caroline 1869, October 14 Wake son of Wm and Jane Yates, daughter of Barba and Gillia Lewter-married at Barbee Lewter's. Caroline's middle name per Death certificate of daughter Cora Jane Yates Howard Scott. Madison Yates was NOT Basil M Yates' son as many researches believe Basil had a 6 yr old son named Madison in 1850 census and

that child either died or went by George after that. Madison was listed as James Yates age 4mos in 1850 and as Madison Yates age 10 yrs in 1860 in the home of his parents William and Middy Jane Ferrell Yates. Basil Yates' will lists 3 living children none of whom are Madison and Rev Madison Yates was alive at the time. Basil Yates' son George was George Madison Yates. Rev. Madison

Yates remarried after Caroline's death. His second wife was Josie BATCHELOR b. August 29, 1867 d March 28, 1965. They had no children together. per 1880 Federal Census,  Wake Co NC White Oak Township. 1900 Federal Census Wake Co NC White Oak Township lists Madison as widower with Cora, Barbee and Pearl. His and these children's birth dates per 1900 Census. Madison married Josie Batchelor in 1907. She was the daughter of William and Nancy Mason Batchelor of Chatham County and is listed as Josie L Batchelor in their home in the 1880 census. She was the granddaughter of Bennett and Martha Yates Batchelor. Oddly, Josie is listed in the 1930 Wake Co census on old Morrisville Rd as Josie L Batchelor (widow) Per Wake Co NC Marriage Register: Yates, Madison (widower) Batchelor, Josie 1906, Nov 8 Wake son of Wm and Jane Yates-daughter of Wm and Nancy Batchelor Cedar Fork Township at J K Gibson's residence JP (he was 56, she was 40). Madison and Caroline are buried at the old Jack Lewter Place cemetery in Chatham Co NC. 600 feet west of SR 1734 Yates Store Rd., Josie is buried in her family cemetery, the Batchelor/Yates cemetery at the junction of New Hope Church Rd and Yates Store Rd in Wake Co NC. Josie's tombstone says 1866. These cemeteries are only about 500 feet apart through the woods. A few hundred feet north of SR 1733 New Hope Church Rd.

Madison and Caroline Yates were the parents of Thomas Patterson Yates who married Lillie Frances Yates. Caroline Josephine 'Tiny' Lewter was Madison Yates' first wife and mother to all of his children. Madison married his 2nd wife, Josie Batchelor in 1907 and they had no children. She is buried in the Batchelor-Yates Lot just up Yates Store Rd from this cemetery and at the intersection of Yates Store Rd and New Hope Church Road

William and Middy Jane Ferrell Yates were my husband's 3g grandparents. The son James listed in the home in 1850 is Rev. James Madison Yates, long time minister of Mt Pisgah Church. He grew up to marry Caroline Josephine Lewter, daughter of Barbee Lewter, who was Caswell Lewter's brother.
