A-2-11  Barbee Lewter son of Henry Lewter and Amelia Kelly was born about 1808 in NC. He died in Nov 1888. He married Gillaney (Gilly) Byrd daughter of Jesse Byrd Jr and Edith Jackson. She was born in 1813 in NC. She died after 1891.

 

Barbee Lewter and Gillaney (Gilly) Byrd were married on 13 Jan 1835 in Wake County, NC. They had the following children:

 

A-3-100 Anne L. Lewter was born in 1836 in NC. She married Christopher Upchurch before 1870. No further info on her.

 

A-3-101  Sarah Isabelle Lewter was born in 1837. She died before 1888.

 

A-3-102  Margaret Ellen Lewter was born on 03 Oct 1837 in Chatham County, NC. She married George Leslie Barbee on 22 Dec 1857 in Wake County, NC. She died on 20 Nov 1922. She was buried in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA..

 

A-3-103 Jane Lewter was born in 1840 in NC. She died about 1909 in Chatham County, NC.

 

A-3-104  William Jackson Lewter was born on 08 Jul 1842 in Wake County, NC. He married Miley Ann Yates on 06 Oct 1870 in Chatham County, NC Marriage Book 2, Page 95. He died on 13 Jul 1924 in Williams, Chatham County, NC. He was buried on 14 Jul 1924 in Madison Yates Cemetery, Chatham County, NC.

 

A-3-105  Helen Lewter was born in 1845 in NC. She married Hilliard Rigsbee on 13 Dec 1877.

 

A-3-106  Henry Benton Lewter was born in Jan 1847 in NC.

 

A-3-107  Caroline Josephine Lewter was born on 31 Aug 1849 in NC. She died on 06 Jan 1900. She was buried in Madison Yates Cem., Chatham County, NC.

 

A-3-108  Jesse Fenton Lewter was born on 01 Sep 1850. He married Fannie Josephine Yates in 1877. He died on 23 Sep 1926 in Apex, Wake County, NC. He was buried on 24 Sep 1926 in "Old Place", Yates-Lewter Family Cemetery, Wake County, NC.

 

A-3-109 Charles M. Lewter was born in Dec 1853 in Wake County, NC. He died on 24 Jan 1917 in White Oak Twp., Wake County, NC. He was buried on 25 Jan 1917 in Lewter Yates Cemetery, Green Level, Wake Co., NC.

This indenture made 17th day of July 1851 between Sims Upchurch Trustee of the County of Chatham and State of North Carolina of the first part and Barbee Lewter of the County of Wake and State aforesaid of the second part.

Now this indenture witnessed that whereas the said Sims Upchurch by virtue of a deed of trust to him executed by Henry C. Lewter for certain purposes therein expressed did on the 6th day of December 1850 after giving ten days notice proceed to sell to the highest bidder on the premises on a credit of nine months one fourth part of the real estate belonging to the heirs of Henry Lewter dec'd late of the County of Chatham and Barbee Lewter became the last and highest bidder for the same at the sum of twenty dollars and whereas the said Sims Upchurch did by virtue of said trust proceed to sell to the highest bidder the said Henry C. Lewters interest in nee ____?____ estate belonging to the heirs of the aforesaid Henry Lewter dec'd and Barbee Lewter became the last and highest bidder for the same at the sum of twelve dollars the receipt whereof of each sale is hereby acknowledged now. I the aforesaid Sims Upchurch as trustee as aforesaid do for myself my heirs and assignees forever warrant and defend the right & title to the above named property both real and personal to the aforesaid Barbee Lewter his heirs and assignees Forever against any claim or claims from any and all persons whatever so far as the virtue of my office ___?___ as trustee as aforesaid and no further. In witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand

Jane Lewter never married. She contested her father, Barbee Lewter's 2nd

will vigorously because the change gave her youngest brother Charles M

Lewter (Charlie) the largest share of the property, including the tract

containing the homeplace. She died testate in 1909. I don't know where she,

Barbee or Gilly are buried at this point. My guess is the cemetery was

cleverly bulldozed by developers. I hope not, but pretty much all of

Barbee's land has been clear cut and developed in the last 4 years.
