Notes for Elias Lewter:

Elias Lewter lived a long and fruitful life having three wives and nine children. Soon after returning from the Civil War, Elias built a new home across from the "Tavern at the fork of the road" and the well dug by him at that time was used as a "water stop" for the stage coach running from Norfolk, Va. to Jackson, NC. It is suspected the stage coach drivers probably quenched their thirst at the tavern

while the horses were being watered at Elias well. The well still bears the distinction of producing "the best water around here" according to the present owners, Edgar T. and Mida (Lewter) Davis. Mida is a grand-daughter of Elias and stated although there are no tombstones for the earlier graves in the family cemetery behind her home, Elias is buiried there with all three of his wives. There are tombstones for some of his children by his third wife.
