Rufus Stark Herring was born in North Carolina and was the brother of John W. Herring. John W. (b. 1816 in NC, and died after 1880 in TX) and Lucy Forbes Mills Herring (b. 1837 in Florida and died after 1863 in TX) were married in 1853 in Leon County, FL, and migrated to Texas before the birth of their son Benjamin Stark Herring in 1861. Rufus Stark Herring married first Louvenia Jane McCoy on June 4, 1851, in Henry County, AL. They were married by Wesley Forbes, grandfather of Lucy Forbes Mills Herring. Louvenia Jane McCoy Herring was born abt 1830 in Leon Co, FL, and died sometime after the 1870 census in Texas, was the daughter of Asa McCoy, b. 1800 in Georgia and Elizabeth Gordon, b. 1800 in GA.
